Verdict: A hot, funny grumpy sunshine romance with a heroine who grows without being sanded down, held back by love-scene language that makes a vocal minority wince, a hero whose old-fashioned streak grates on some readers and a third act many call contrived.

Best for: Readers who want a fish-out-of-water heroine, a bearded sea captain who falls hard and explicit, dirty-talking open-door scenes, and who can forgive heavily gendered phrasing in the bedroom and a breakup that runs on coincidence.

Heat level: ★★★★☆ (4/5, explicit; romance.io's band could not be confirmed, so we scored it from All About Romance's Hot rating, Kirkus's note on high-heat scenes and Smexy Books' praise for the dirty talk)

Rating: ★★★★☆ (3.6/5, a 3.88 Goodreads average across about 765,000 ratings, pulled down because the critical reviews keep circling the same three things: the sex-scene wording, Brendan's possessive streak and a contrived third act)

Tropes: Grumpy sunshine, Fish out of water, Small town, Opposites attract, Rich girl cut off, Widowed hero, Sister bond, Inherited dive bar, He thinks she won't last, Hero falls first.

It Happened One Summer is the first Bellinger Sisters novel by Tessa Bailey, a contemporary small-town romance set in the fishing town of Westport, Washington, in which Piper Bellinger, a Los Angeles party girl and influencer whose stepfather cuts her off after a rooftop party gets out of hand, has to run her late father's dive bar with her sister Hannah and keeps colliding with Brendan Taggart, a widowed sea captain who is sure she won't last.

The numbers are big and steady. Goodreads shows a 3.88 average from about 765,000 ratings and roughly 69,000 written reviews, and Bailey's author page lists it as her most-rated book. Avon published it on July 13, 2021, Kirkus and Booklist both starred it, and in 2026 it is back in the news with a film adaptation starring Nina Dobrev and Tyler Hoechlin shooting in New York. Fans praise it in the same handful of words, Brendan, Piper's growth and the sisters. The minority who bounced off it are just as consistent, and knowing which camp you're in is the thing worth sorting out before you buy.

What Is It Happened One Summer About?

This is a fish-out-of-water rom-com with a grief story under it. Piper arrives in Westport with a socialite's skills and none of a bartender's, and the early chapters get their comedy from her trying, and failing, to fit into a town of fishermen who have already decided what she is. The bar belonged to their late father, and All About Romance's reviewer reads the book as much about healing from grief as about romance.

Bailey sold it on a television comparison. The publisher's copy points readers at Schitt's Creek, and Bailey has said Alexis Rose was her model for Piper: a woman everyone underestimates who surprises herself by being useful. That pitch sets up a story about money and humility, and readers disagree about how far the book follows through on it. What it delivers without argument is a romance between a woman who talks to be liked and a man who barely talks at all.

What Makes This Grumpy Sunshine Small-Town Romance Work

Book Synopsis

Piper Bellinger lives in Los Angeles on her stepfather's money and her followers' attention. She's beautiful, well dressed and very good at being photographed, and she has never had to be good at anything else. When a party she throws on a rooftop spirals out of control and ends up in the news, her stepfather Daniel decides he's done. The allowance stops, and Piper and her sister Hannah are sent north with a little cash and an assignment.

The assignment is a bar. Their late father left behind a run-down dive bar in Westport, Washington, a fishing town on the Pacific coast where the weather is grey, the work is hard and nobody cares how many people follow you online. The sisters are supposed to get the place back on its feet. Hannah is ready to roll up her sleeves. Piper has no idea where to start, and the town notices.

The person who notices most is Brendan Taggart, a widowed fishing boat captain and convinced that a woman like Piper will be on a plane home within days. He doesn't hide his opinion, and Piper doesn't hide that she finds him rude and very large. The trouble is that Brendan keeps turning up when the bar breaks down, Piper keeps proving him wrong in small ways, and the sniping between them starts to feel like flirting to everyone in town, including the two of them.

Our Review

Brendan is why this book sold. Bailey writes him as a man of few words who is undone by a woman he has decided to dislike, and she lets readers see him fall long before he admits it. The grumpy sunshine label on Goodreads is earned. Fans in the 3-star reviews, not just the 5-star ones, keep pointing to his small practical gestures for Piper as the moments they remember, and Smexy Books lists his courtship, from home repairs to a garden, among its ten reasons to read it.

The second strength is Piper, and the craft reason is that Bailey never makes her apologise for being Piper. She stays chatty, image-conscious and funny, and her growth comes from finding out she's competent, not from turning into a different woman. All About Romance's Rachel Finston, who graded it A-, says Piper stays herself without giving up her personality for love, and Marie W at Under the Covers says the same thing in nearly the same words. The sister plot helps. Hannah gives Piper someone to be brave for, which is the Alexis Rose idea Bailey said she was chasing.

Where it struggles is the writing in the bedroom, and that is the dominant complaint among critical readers. Several 2-star reviewers on Goodreads quote lines from the sex scenes as unintentionally funny, and at least two object to how often the text reminds you that he is very male and she is very feminine. Behind that sit two secondary problems. At least three low-star reviewers find Brendan possessive or old-fashioned, and one cites his views about women working on boats. The third act draws the other recurring complaint: Kirkus, in an otherwise starred review, calls the conflict hurried, and Goodreads reviewers describe the late drama as melodramatic and dependent on convenient coincidences.

Reset the Schitt's Creek expectation before you start. The marketing promises a story about a rich girl learning the value of money, and the setup is exactly that. The book is more interested in Piper's confidence than her bank balance. Cidnya Silva at But Why Tho liked the romance and gave it 4 out of 5, but called the handling of Piper's finances a disappointing missed chance next to the show. If you want a comedy about class, you'll find a sketch of one. If you want a heroine who proves she's more than her pictures and a hero who wants her before she does, this is the book.

It also helps to know Bailey's style going in. Her heroes talk dirty and her heroines are adored in very physical terms, and readers who already know her books mostly treat that as the point. Readers who arrive from BookTok or the film news without that context account for many of the cringe reviews. A B+ review at Good Bad and Unread docked the grade for exactly this, praising the story while calling out awkward word choices in the dialogue.

Our honest note: A warm, sexy opposites-attract romance whose hero and heroine are stronger than its sex-scene prose or its third act. Read it if a devoted grump and explicit heat are what you want and gendered phrasing won't throw you; skip it if you're hoping for the class satire the Schitt's Creek pitch suggests.

How Spicy Is It Happened One Summer?

Spicy, and the critics agree on it. All About Romance rated the print edition Hot, Kirkus mentions high-heat sex scenes, Booklist says the love scenes are hot enough to boil water, and Smexy Books praises the filthy scenes and the dirty talk. A 2023 review at The Litmosphere gives it three flames. We put it at 4: the door is fully open, there are several explicit scenes once Piper and Brendan get together, and the first stretch builds on bickering and tension rather than sex. AAR's audiobook reviewer marked it Warm, so ratings vary with the reader, but no source we found calls it mild.

Know what kind of spice it is. Bailey's scenes lean on dirty talk and on a big, protective hero, and the language is heavily gendered. That's the part fans love and the part detractors quote. One 3-star reader called the content pure pornography, while Smexy Books gave the book an A and put the filthy love scenes on its list of reasons to read it. If you've read Bailey before and liked her, this is her in form. If Brendan's lines in bed sound like a parody to you in the first scene, they won't change.

Who Should Read This Book?

You'll likely love it if: you want a grumpy hero who falls first and falls hard, a heroine who stays bubbly while she grows up, explicit scenes with plenty of dirty talk, and a small fishing town with a sister you'll want to read about next.

You may want to skip it if: heavily gendered sex-scene language makes you laugh in the wrong places, a possessive hero is a dealbreaker, or you're expecting the sharp class comedy of Schitt's Creek.

In short: a crowd-pleasing summer romance that runs on Brendan and the sisters, with prose and plotting you have to meet halfway.

What Readers Are Actually Saying (October 2026)

Five years after publication, It Happened One Summer is still finding new readers, and the channel is easy to trace. Bustle frames Bailey as a BookTok favourite and notes this is her top-rated book on Goodreads, and the 2026 film news has given it a second wave. Netflix Junkie and Screen Daily report that the adaptation is an independent production from BCDF Pictures, with Frolic Media and Bailey among the executive producers, Peter Hutchings directing, and Nina Dobrev, Tyler Hoechlin, Virginia Gardner and Gavin Leatherwood cast as Piper, Brendan, Hannah and Fox. Filming was under way in New York in August 2026 and no release date had been announced. One earlier report described it as a Netflix project; the later trade coverage does not. We could not reach Reddit or StoryGraph for this review, so the reader picture here comes from Goodreads, blogs and trade reviews.

Why readers love it: Readers love Brendan first. In the 3-star Goodreads reviews alone he is praised about eight times, usually for how attentive he becomes, and the 5-star reviews are louder still. Piper's growth comes next, with readers stressing that she stays herself. The sisters come third and carry real weight: AAR's print review calls their care for each other one of the book's strengths, and Smexy Books puts the sister bond in its top ten. Charlotte North's audiobook narration earned an A- from AAR's audio reviewer, who praised her voice for Brendan.

What readers argue about and complain about: The complaints split three ways, and they repeat. The sex scenes come first: reviewers named Betty, Zoë and Katie quote lines they found absurd, and others object to the steady drumbeat of male and feminine. Brendan is second, with at least three reviewers calling him possessive or caveman-like and one taking issue with his views about women on boats. The third act is third: Kirkus calls it hurried, and two Goodreads reviewers call the late drama contrived. Smaller voices add that the romance moves fast, that the banter thins once the pair get together, and, in an AAR comment thread and at Smexy Books, that a blurb line about Piper not being able to do math leans on a tired stereotype. AAR's Rachel Finston also wanted more closure with Piper's mother and stepfather.

The series question worth asking first: Piper and Brendan get a complete happy ending, and there's no cliffhanger. The sequel, Hook, Line, and Sinker, came out on March 1, 2022 and follows Hannah and Fox Thornton, the charming fisherman from Brendan's world, as a friends-to-lovers story that begins with texting and a spare room. It sits at 3.86 on Goodreads from about 472,000 ratings, almost level with this book's 3.88, and Wikipedia lists it as a New York Times bestseller. Several Goodreads reviewers of book one say the Fox scenes are what sold them on reading on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is It Happened One Summer spicy?

Yes. It's explicit and open door, with several sex scenes and a lot of dirty talk once Piper and Brendan get together. All About Romance rated it Hot, and we score it 4 out of 5.

Is It Happened One Summer like Schitt's Creek?

In its setup, yes. The publisher pitched it with the show, and Bailey has said Alexis Rose inspired Piper. The book focuses more on Piper's confidence and romance than on money, and at least one reviewer felt it missed the show's care on that theme.

Is It Happened One Summer grumpy sunshine?

Yes, and it's one of the best-known examples. Brendan is the taciturn grump and Piper the bubbly sunshine, and Goodreads shelves it under grumpy sunshine. He falls first, which is the part fans quote most.

Do I need to read It Happened One Summer before Hook, Line, and Sinker?

It helps but isn't required. Each book resolves its own couple, but Hannah and Fox are both introduced here, and the Fox scenes are what several readers say sold them on book two.

Does It Happened One Summer have a happy ending?

Yes. Piper and Brendan end together with a full happy ending and no cliffhanger, though the road there includes a third-act conflict many readers find contrived.

Is there a movie of It Happened One Summer?

Yes, one is in production. Trade reports in August 2026 said it was filming in New York with Nina Dobrev and Tyler Hoechlin, from BCDF Pictures, with no release date yet.

If Brendan's slow surrender was the draw, go to Things We Never Got Over, another city woman stranded in a small town with a gruff local who won't admit he's gone. The Bottom Line

It Happened One Summer sets out to be Schitt's Creek by the sea with an open bedroom door, and it lands the romance far better than the satire. What works: Brendan as a grump who falls first, a heroine who grows without being flattened, and the sisters. What doesn't: sex-scene prose that a vocal minority finds unintentionally funny, a hero whose possessiveness grates on some readers, and a third act that runs on coincidence. If you like Bailey's dirty-talking heroes or want to try one, start here. If the bedroom language puts you off early, it won't win you back.

On the Eikna scale, It Happened One Summer ranks as a defining grumpy sunshine summer romance, strongest in its hero and its sisters, constrained by divisive love-scene prose and a forced third act, and best approached for chemistry and heat rather than for the class comedy its pitch implies.
